UMMI was inspired by the reality that, for many women in rural Nigeria, giving birth safely is determined not only by medical need but by geography. The film follows Ummi and Kamal, a young couple forced to walk several kilometres in search of skilled maternal care as Ummi goes into labour.
The story was motivated by the countless women who continue to face dangerous journeys because quality healthcare remains out of reach. Distance, poor infrastructure, poverty, and limited access to emergency obstetric services turn what should be a joyful moment into a life-threatening experience for mothers and their babies.
Ummi presents these challenges through statistics and intimate storytelling, placing audiences alongside the couple and inviting them to experience the urgency, uncertainty, and resilience that define their journey. The film seeks to humanize maternal health inequities, spark conversations about access to healthcare, and inspire action towards ensuring that no woman has to risk her life simply to give birth.
